What Does Your Tattoo Mean To You?

What does your tattoo mean to you? We’d love to hear your story!

I’ve been in the temporary tattoo world for 20 years, and in that time I’ve come to observe, admire (and sometimes recoil) at tattoos in all their forms—whether temporary or permanent. One thing is for sure, there’s always a story behind the ink. My niece and her husband were here over the weekend, visiting from New York, and I couldn’t help asking him about the rather large image of a man’s face on his forearm. Turned out it was his dad, who passed away too young several years ago. The face with the kind smile doesn’t mean anything to anyone but his son, who is reminded how much he loved and misses his dad whenever he looks at his tattoo. That’s powerful stuff.

You might think that people springing for a temporary henna tattoo or jagua tattoo don’t invest as much time or energy thinking about the significance of the design they’ve chosen, but you would be wrong. Even if it lasts 7 to 14 days, depending on whether you’ve chosen henna or jagua, that tattoo is still staining their skin, body and psyche for the duration; and people do give it weight.

People who chose a flower, nature-themed design, or vine tend to say, at first, that they just think their tattoo is pretty. But given a chance to explain further, they’ll say things like, It makes me think of spring! I feel like I’m inviting summer into my life. Because it makes me smile. (Love that about our product.) Others say things like This tribal design makes me feel really badass. It reminds me of my fierceness. Like I said, all kinds of reasons why.
