Drawing with Henna

Henna tattoo design drawn on arm

I’ve been thinking about the adult coloring trend, which started in 2015. I remember being at the Craft & Hobby trade show in Anaheim in 2016, and watching in wonder as the booth across the aisle from us totally sold out, by show’s end, of its entire inventory of adult coloring books. I was blown away!

At first I thought it was so weird. Grown people drawing in coloring books? But as friends (of all ages) started reporting on the feelings of serenity and peace that would overtake them as they drew, I stopped judging the thing (hate it when I do that!), and started looking at it from a different perspective.

I can see how filling in pre-drawn lines with color would be an extremely meditative and relaxing pastime. And I can’t help feeling that it’s a lot like drawing on oneself with henna!

First of all, let’s remember that the medicinal properties of the henna plant include that of soothing the nervous system. So, not only does decorating one’s body with henna naturally provide a totally chill experience to begin with, you’re also drawing, which engenders an opportunity for calming down and unwinding in the face of our fast-paced, hectic lives.

Check out this video, and tell me that just watching it doesn’t make you want to lie down and dream pleasant, wistful dreams of you, adorned with henna tattoos, and looking gorgeous as you nap in a beautiful field of green grass and tiny pink and white flowers. Me too!

That’s Paddy from our office, drawing with henna over one of the stencils that come in our Premium Henna Tattoo Kit. You would first apply eucalyptus oil on the area where you want to create your tattoo, place the stencil face down for 30 seconds, lift it off, and trace over the design with henna paste—slowly. You can see how pretty the finished design would look if you did it on your foot, like our friend Katherine did in the above photo!

If you want to get started drawing on yourself with henna, visit our website at EarthHenna.com to get one of our all-natural, easy-to-use kits, which come with stencil transfers for the artistically challenged. As you head over our way, start breathing slowly and deeply….
