Are White Henna Tattoos Here to Stay?

Are white henna tattoos here to stay? When we first introduced henna tattoos to the West Coast by opening the first henna studio in the United States (that was 20 years ago!), I was interviewed a lot by the press. I must have done an interview every week for six months! That’s how high the enthusiasm was for henna. Our studio had 12 artists working on rotation, and people were calling from all over the world to make appointments. Crazy!

But guess what? All these years later, henna remains as popular as it ever was. Next week we head to VidCon (the YouTubers’ conference), where for the past three years, 3-hour-long lines have snaked around our booth packed with online video lovers waiting for their opportunity to get or create a henna tattoo. Crazy!

Back when I was giving all those interviews, the question I heard most often was: Do you think this trend will last? Obviously I couldn’t see into the future, but my gut was telling me Yes! To me, the love of temporary tattoos is driven by the popularity of permanent tattoos, which doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. There’s no mystery around it—human beings love body ornamentation. Think jewelry, cosmetics, piercings, nail art, glitter tattoos and now, white henna.

Which brings me to the question I have for you. Do you think those gorgeous white henna tattoos, and their close cousin, the silver glitter tattoo, will stay as popular as they are now? They’ve been in vogue for quite some time now, which is why we came up with our own white henna kit. Come festival time and summertime, orders for our White Lace kits go nuts! So, if you look into your crystal ball, what do you see? Will white henna tattoos still be going strong in 10 years? 20 years? Will glitter tattoos still be shimmering away decades from now? If not, what do you think is the element that makes the popularity of henna tattoos endure? Would love to see your comments!
